BEAVERS BUSY EARNING THEIR STRIPES
The Beavers and Cubs have been hard at work trying to earn their all important badges. The Beavers (pictured above) were working on their Faith badge, ably assisted by one of the Group Leaders. The Cubs were attempting to collect their Communication badge, trying to create effective instructions, and improving on their listening skills.
1V SCOUTS CELEBRATE 3RD BIRTHDAY WITH FUN ACTIVITIES
1V Scouts celebrated their third anniversary with a range of treats for the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts.
The Beavers and Cubs joined forces to take part in bead and candle making projects, ably assisted with experts on hand. While the Scouts had the opportunity of completing a human Hungry Hippos Challenge, even some of the Leaders took part.
One of the Cubs Maleeha said, “I Cannot believe that candle making could be so much fun.”
The 1V Scouts started in February 2014 with around 14 members, but it has now grown to over 76 beavers, cubs and scouts – with over 20 children on the waiting list.
Speaking about the success of 1V Scouts Nisbah Hussain, Leader, said
“It has been really exciting to have helped so many young people in Blackburn achieve some of their potential by joining the 1V Scouts. We did not expect he sessions to be so well attended and the whole project has grown each year. We have some exciting plans for 2017 where we hope to be able to support more children achieve their scouting dreams.”
INVESTING IN THE FUTURE
The 1V Scouts took part in an Investiture Ceremony to close out a year full of activities that included the setting up a Scouts Troop in the Summer.
The ceremony saw the members receive their neckerchiefs and recite the Beaver promise in the presence of their proud parents! The ceremony marks their membership of the worldwide Scout Movement.
Scout leader Nisbah Hussain said,
“The 1V Scouts are unparalleled. They have excelled in every task they have been involved in. Their enthusiasm is infectious. I have seen personal development and growth in each member. I look forward to resuming activities in the new year.”
The 1V Scouts also took part in a fun end of year party. The group were taken to the trampoline park at Energi Preston where the whole arena was booked for the party. The 1V Scouts are now taking a three-week break.
OVER 70 JOIN SCOUTS MOVEMENT
An incredible 72 young people joined the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts for the new season. We have had to take the tough decision of implementing a waiting list for next September. At the launch of the 2016/2017 Scouts Year Group Leader Nisbah Hussain welcomed the parents and Scouts by reinforcing the highlights of the previous year including trips to London, Blackpool and the Great Tower in the Lake District.
New neckerchiefs were presented to the existing members, and the audience was also informed of One Voice’s other groups and projects. One of the parents said,
“What started off as 16 young people has turned into an amazing project. It’s great to have been a part of this all and my daughter has learned so much and taken part in activities and trips that most kids her age can only dream of.”
1V Scouts is made up of the Beaver colony, the Cubs pack, and from September 2016 the Scouts troop. The groups meet most Saturday mornings at Brookhouse Primary School from 10.00am. There are over a dozen leaders, including the Group Leader Nisbah Hussain. To join the waiting list for one of the groups or for more information please email: email@example.com.
Scouts Always Find a Way
At 1V Scouts its all about learning new skills and having a sense of adventure. The 1V Scouts had a great session earlier in the year learning to use maps complete with compasses. The Cubs and Beavers participated in an activity using map skills to follow routes and directions.
The children learnt about the cardinal direction they had to follow. They were then given maps of Blackburn and pinpointed their favourite places within the town with an X.
Additionally, they assessed maps of London on which they identified public transport, museums, theatres, toilets, main roads and other key locations using the ordnance survey map symbols.
No Sleep at the Blackpool Sleepover
The 1V Scouts had their first sleepover at Blackpool Tower in 2015. The Scouts set off to Blackpool on November 28 in a group of 42 Beavers from across the Blackburn area. nThe trip included an exciting outing to the circus which entailed watching the pantomime ‘Pinocchio’ and concluded with a whale scene which saw the circus floor filled with water!
Following the pantomime the Beavers were treated to the exclusive use of the soft play area followed by a night sleeping on the circus floor. Fun and games ensued complete with invigorating stories and then bedtime. The next morning began nice and early with an exclusive breakfast in the same ballroom where Strictly Come Dancing had been held the week before. The final part of the trip was the 4D show.
Due to stormy conditions, the Beavers were unable to go up Blackpool Tower. The 1V Scouts thoroughly enjoyed their first night away from their family.
Fire Visit, Blackpool Excursion and Christmas Treat
The Beavers and Cubs often enjoy little treats, like an end of year visit to Vue Cinemas, and it concluded a busy few months for the Scouts.
Parachute Bonding for Beavers and Cubs
OVER the last few years the 1V Scouts have welcomed many new participants to the group. An integral part of being in any group is instilling a sense of community.
The 1V Scouts, including both the beavers and the cubs, embarked upon a number of activities with the help of a colourful parachute! The children had a thoroughly enjoyable time and it was wonderful to see their great sense of camaraderie. 1V Scouts also began their applications for the much coveted Blue Peter badges. The popular Blue Peter badges are sought after by over 22,000 people every week!
The 1V Scouts worked with excitement and concentration on their short stories, poems and ideas for new episodes in the letters recounting trips to Singapore and making oversea pen-pals to trips to the space centre in America.
1V Scouts Take Part in Mela ‘It’s a Knockout’
The 1V Scouts took part in the It’s a knockout tournament at the One Voice Mela in July 2015. The Cubs competed in the assault course, badminton and tug of war in the four team event in Corporation Park in Blackburn.
